Class of Travel
Basic Economy offers the lowest fares with a main cabin seat, free snacks, soft drinks, and inflight entertainment. Basic Economy fares cannot be mixed with other fare types.
Premium Economy provides wider seats with more legroom, adjustable foot and headrests, chef-inspired dining with complimentary beer, wine, spirits, amenity kits and bedding on international flights, Wi-Fi, and power outlets.
Business Class offers the airline’s premium service for shorter international flights connecting the U.S. with Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and select cities in South America. It enhances travel with wider seats, more legroom, priority privileges, premium dining choices, Wi-Fi, free inflight entertainment, pillows, blankets, and Flagship lounge access on qualifying flights.
First class, offered on U.S. domestic flights, provides the highest service level with wider seats, extra legroom, priority privileges, Five Star Service options, curated dining selections, free entertainment with wireless streaming , and Wi-Fi for purchase on select aircraft.
Flagship Business International elevates long-haul international and certain Hawaii routes with lie-flat seats, multi-course chef-inspired meals, lounge access, amenity kits, premium bedding, Wi-Fi, and free entertainment.
Flagship Business Transcontinental provides similar services as their international counterparts but on domestic flights within the U.S on select routes, including Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO) to JFK, JFK to Orange County (SNA) on A321T aircraft, LAX to Boston (BOS) on A321T, and LAX to Miami (MIA) on widebody or A321T aircraft.
Flagship First International offers even greater exclusivity, private check-in, Flagship First Dining, and superior comforts for international or transcontinental flights, enhancing every element of the journey.
Flagship First Transcontinental offers services comparable to their international counterparts but exclusively on domestic U.S. flights. These are available on select routes operated by Boeing 777-300 and A321T aircraft, including Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO) to JFK, JFK to Orange County (SNA), LAX to Boston (BOS), and LAX to Miami (MIA).
Baggage Allowance
American Airlines permits one carry-on item and one personal item per passenger. Carry-ons must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front, adhering to size limits of 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Personal items, such as purses, should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Additional restrictions may apply at some airports and on certain aircraft.
Checked baggage allowances vary by region and passenger status. Standard limits include a maximum size of 62 inches and weight of 50 pounds. First and Business class travelers may check bags up to 70 pounds.
Eligible AAdvantage® or oneworld® status may qualify for up to three free checked bags on itineraries marketed and operated by American Airlines. The number of complimentary bags depends on the traveler’s highest status level at the time of ticketing or check-in, and the AAdvantage® number must be included in the reservation.
AAdvantage® Program
American Airlines’ AAdvantage® Frequent Flyer Program enables members to earn miles and Loyalty Points through flights, AAdvantage® credit card use, and partner engagements.
Progressing through tiers—Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum—members receive enhanced benefits such as increased mile earnings, complimentary checked bags, priority boarding, and complimentary upgrades.
Members can redeem miles for flights, hotel stays, car rentals, vacations, and exclusive experiences. Additionally, they can upgrade cabins on select flights, access lounges, and gift or transfer miles. In-flight Services
American Airlines offers extensive in-flight entertainment, enabling passengers to stream a complimentary library of movies, music, and TV shows on their personal devices.
Exclusive features include Apple TV+ and Apple Music, alongside Lifestyle channels with Skillshare and Matador Network. Additionally, children can enjoy Hey Bear Sensory content, and complimentary snacks and beverages are provided on flights over 250 miles.
The airline provides upgraded, high-speed Wi‑Fi for purchase on select domestic flights starting at $10. Frequent travelers may choose monthly or annual Wi‑Fi subscriptions, available to AAdvantage® members with a U.S. billing address.
American Airlines also accepts contactless payments for in-flight purchases, offering discounts for eligible credit cardholders and ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the journey.
Check-in
American Airlines advises passengers to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures to ensure sufficient time for check-in and security procedures. Travelers should verify any destination-specific travel restrictions and bring necessary documents.
To streamline the process, passengers can utilize curbside check-in or self-service kiosks if they have an electronic ticket that can be scanned from their devices.
Online check-in is available through the American Airlines website or mobile app, starting 24 hours before the flight and closing 45 minutes before domestic departures and 90 minutes before international flights.
Onboard Support
Travelers can request services such as wheelchair assistance, hearing or vision support, and cognitive or developmental aid when booking online or via the American app. Coordinators ensure all requirements are met before the trip.
For unaccompanied minors, the airline provides comprehensive support, including early boarding, dedicated lounges, and airport escorts.
Special seating and extra space options are available for those needing comfort or additional room.
Senior travelers can request early boarding and wheelchair assistance, ensuring priority support throughout their journey.
Refund & Cancellation
American Airlines provides full refunds within 24 hours of purchase for tickets booked at least two days before departure, provided the trip has been canceled. This policy applies to all fare types except group reservations. Refunds are issued to the original payment method, minus non-refundable taxes and service charges.
Tickets purchased through travel agencies must be refunded via the agency.
Refundable tickets bought directly can be refunded online within one year of issuance.
Non-refundable tickets may receive refunds under specific conditions, such as schedule changes or emergencies and if rebooking offers are declined.
Unused non-refundable tickets can be applied toward future travel as trip or flight credits if canceled before the first flight.
Certain unused services like pet fees and priority boarding are eligible for refunds.
